Ergo Proxy

Rating star1.gif

Synopsis
A domed city in a post-apocalyptic world with a powerful kabal inside the government that has secretly created a cyborg monster thing. And the woman with the big gun is an investigator – and granddaughter of someone very powerful in said government – who’s decided, against orders, to uncover the monster’s secret. Or something like that.

Reactions
I had so much hope for this series. Manglobe, who produced one of my favourite shows Samurai Champloo also produced Ergo Proxy. And that is evident in the look of the show: gorgeous lines, dark atmospheres and wild character designs. A lot of attention to detail. Unfortunately, this show suffers from what I call the Mamoru Oshii syndrome: a purposefully and frustratingly complicated intellectual plot discussion about the same old same old topic of cyborgs gaining consciousness.

After watching 3 episodes I was confused and bored. I abandoned the show when I realized that I was watching it because I thought I should, like it was good for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ghost in the Shell and have watched both movies and TV series. But Ghost did it first, did it well, and has compelling characters.

Like they did with giant robots, Japanese animators have to get over the whole cyborg thing and find a new obsession… maybe breakmaking?

Your impression of the series totally reminds me of a series I finished a while ago called “Texhnolyze” [texhnolyzedvd.com]. The production is said to be a reunion of sorts because they were involved with “Serial Experiments Lain.” The series seem to drag on forever, but in the end, it was worth it. It had a lot of interesting themes and motifs, it’s something you can’t wrap your head around even on second viewing. That’s probably it’s best quality, compared to bubble gum anime, if ya know what I mean.

The screen shot looks rad. I might watch a few eps and judge for myself. I’m hoping it will be good…. The title is interesting too.

I just finished ergo proxy, and despite the whole “machine’s gaining consciousness” thing, a lot of it isn’t really about the machine’s at all, but rather the proxies. Meh iono, maybe its just preference 😀

  3. I was wondering if you ever considered changing the structure of your site?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
