Model Kit: 1/72 Nausicaä Gunship
From: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Time to build: 10 hours
Difficulty: easy (except for having to build the inside of the cockpit before the body of the ship)
This has got to be one of the freakiest looking airplanes ever designed, with an organic bird shape and a big ol’ gun sticking out the front. As a model kit, it was mercifully simple to build.
The trickiest part of this kit was having to build the cockpits – assembling and painting the *tiny* seats and little silver guns – before the rest of the body. This is also a very small model, so I had to be very careful with the details and small pieces.
I tried one important new technique with this model: weathering – the art of making your models look like they’ve flown or seen battle. It’s subtle, but I added a slightly darker shade of the body paint along all the “seams”, and I added a fine dark mist around the outside of the front gun barrels to make them look like they’ve been fired many times. Weathering turned out to be easier than I’d feared, requiring just a good amount of hand control. But the effect is striking.
I feel ready to move onto something more challenging, detailed and above all else, bigger!
